FOUNDER STORY
Callie Mae Nichole Lyons, originally from Augusta, GA, is a multidisciplinary artist trained extensively in modern,
ballet, tap, and jazz. In her early 20s, she began her pursuits towards the world of filmmaking. In her exploration of
film, she has utilized compositional dance tools as a means to heighten the kinesthetic experience in film praxis.
Callie’s most recent dance endeavors include working both domestically and internationally with Brooklyn based
choreographer, Jonah Bokaer, leading her to perform in venues such as the Howard Gilman Opera House at the
Brooklyn Academy of Music, Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, The Solomon R. Guggenheim
Museum, Jacob’s Pillow, Meyerson Symphony Center with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, The Royce Hall at UCLA,
Philip Johnson’s Glass House, The Onassis Cultural Center in New York, and abroad in countries such as France,
Serbia, and Australia. Callie has also worked with choreographers such as Holly Johnston, Crystal Pite, Sonya Tayeh,
Nathan Trice, Pamela Pietro, Damon Rago, Chad Michael Hall, Allyson Green, and Will Rawls to name a few.
Callie’s latest short film, Edge of Red (2019), shot on 16mm, has screened at BAMCinemaFEST, Edinburgh International
Film Festival, Indie Memphis Film Festival, Tacoma Film Festival, Festival CineMigrante, and was streamed on Topic in
2021 as part of a shorts series curated by Roger Ross Williams. In addition, she served as the Assistant Director on the
feature film Residue (2020), written and directed by Merawi Gerima, and Associate Producer to the short films Where
My Memory Began (2023) and We Will Be Who We Are (2024), both written and directed by Priscillia Kounkou
Hoveyda.
Callie received her B.A. in Dance and Business Marketing from Loyola Marymount University (2011), her M.F.A. in
Dance and New Media from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts (2014), studied hyper-physical modern dance at the
Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance in Salzburg, Austria, and studied for 3 semesters towards her M.F.A. in Film
Production from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts before departing to create on her
own terms.
Callie dreams up and weaves deeply personal stories rooted in familial history, childhood, intimacy, love, grief,
spirituality, her ancestors, the land, and mysticism through visual fragmentation, non-linear storytelling, and
movement.
Having spent over a decade marveling in the profundity of independent cinema, Callie is launching Upcycled Films to explore new
possibilities within the realm of film preservation and sourcing, to reinvigorate unseen and unfound works, to be a
witness to the past, and to honor its history
